How’s 2020 treating you so far? If you’re still lazing around the pool, we’ve got news for you! There’s no better time to get fitter and healthier than right now! The kids are almost back at school so it’s the perfect time to focus on you!

The festive season might have taken its toll and added a few unwanted pounds. So if you took it easy with your 2020 resolutions in mind, you’ve got the advantage. Last week we told you that change happens by forming new habits, and that is definitely the case with the journey to getting fit.

Why should I get fit?

Our lifestyles have become more and more sedentary over the last decade or two. Why exercise when you can binge-watch movies and television shows on Netflix or ShowMax? This static lifestyle is the source of a whole range of health problems for modern society ranging from Type 2 Diabetes to chronic joint pains to obesity. In 2013, the World Health Organization says worldwide obesity has tripled since 1975.

Getting fit means you will:

  • Sleep better
  • Be more productive
  • Keep your brain sharp
  • Strengthen your bones
  • Get sick less
  • Lift your spirits
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Reduce your risk of a stroke
  • Feel better overall

How do I get fit?

  • Ditch fast foods and takeaways

It’s not only good for your waistline but for your wallet as well. Preparing your meals at home gives you more control over the components it is made up of.

  • Follow a balanced eating plan

Jumping on another quick-fix diet is bound to end in disaster. So rather try a plan that you can commit too.

    • Stay away from miracle cures
We’re bombarded with influencers and infomercials trying to sell magical pills, teas and even lollipops these days promising to make the extra weight disappear. These quick fixes are often not approved by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and will have no lasting effect on your weight loss.

  • Go slow

Don’t pick up where you left off last year. Ease into your exercise programme and give your body time to get back into the swing of things!

    • There’s an app for that
If you don’t like hitting the gym a few times a week, you can definitely work out in the comfort of your own home saving money while you get fitter and fitter! Simply type in exercise in your app store and you’ll be surprised at how many pops up. There are also loads of 30-day challenges on there. Why not start with one of those and gain momentum as you go along.

  • Grab a buddy

Getting a friend or family member involved will be a great motivator. If you’ve arranged to go for a walk around the block at 7 in the morning, you’ll be less likely to hit that snooze button when you know someone will be waiting for you around the corner.

  • Stay hydrated

Afterall, we are in the height of summer at the moment. Staying hydrated will may naturally curb your appetite, but it can also help you feel better fast.

  • Relax and let go

Going back to work and picking up your eating and exercising habits can be a bitter pill to swallow. So remember to turn off the gadgets and meditate or sit still for a few minutes at least once a day. Close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply in and out. Some experts say it may help to visualise the path you are on and the results you are wanting to achieve. Give it a try! What’s the worst that can happen?
